Hey Linux people, I am finally getting ready to retire my MacBook Pro and I would be getting the air, but I want to use Linux so I was hoping you all could help me out.
Anyone have a hardware recommendation that will surpass the MacBook Air in terms of cost, build quality, and weight? I hear there is an Apple tax, but I can't find a product that beats the Air in all three areas. I'd appreciate any ideas.
To give some more background, I have installed Ubuntu on a chromebook and was really impressed with the Linux experience, but the hardware was a little too flimsy and the deal breaker was a high pitched ultrasonic whine emitted from the laptop from some low budget component. Next I tried out some distros with my MacBook Pro, but the power management issues kept the laptop too toasty for my taste. I know i can tinker with power management settings, but I think I want a plastic machine so that there is some more insulation. I am in the medical field, so I will only be using this machine to play some power points, read scientific papers, and surf the web. Processing power is not really important. Build quality and lightness are most important, price is also important because I'm still considering getting the air and just putting up with the heat or even pinching my nose and just keeping osx. But please rescue me from this walled garden! :)
