Barrier - a Synergy fork

Starting from version 2, synergy uses it's own servers to create the connection between computers, even when these are on the lan. Thus, it requires internet connection to work. AFAIK version 1 only needed lan connection to operate. This is where the new fork comes in: barrier - https://github.com/debauchee/barrier

It is supposed to be a fork from synergy version 1. Did anyone tried it? I'm curious to know whether it actually is lan-only and if it runs any better than the original project. There aren't any help files and its documentation is very thin.
